Finally, this is done! I really disliked being late with this challenge, especially since it was my week to choose the theme!
I’m sorry about that. Please see my previous post about for all of the details of this week’s Twilight Tuesday Inspiration Challenge; I’ll focus just on my project in this post.
I absolutely love the theme of Twilight quotes as our inspiration. Seriously — I could do about ten of this theme and not tire of it! (Much in the same way that I just keep reading the books without tiring of them.) The minute I thought of this theme, I knew that I would need to choose an Edward quote. How could I not? He’s just so eloquent, and there is always so much going on in that head of his. And the ultimate Edward comes from Midnight Sun, which, even though it is incomplete, is my favorite piece of the Twilight saga. I had to choose something from that! (This photo to the right is very "Midnight Sun" to me.) I chose the big moment — Edward’s epiphany, when he realizes that he "could no longer pretend that he was only in danger of loving" Bella:

My life was an unending, unchanging midnight. It must, by necessity, always be midnight for me. So how was it possible that the sun was rising now, in the middle of my midnight?
This is just such a beautiful moment, with such beautiful writing by Stephenie Meyer (see pages 108-109 in the Midnight Sun PDF). It’s all so lovely that I have to stop myself from quoting the entire page….but here’s just one more:
It would always be this way for me, too. I would always love this fragile human girl, for the rest of my limitless existence.
So given that Midnight Sun is my favorite part of the Twilight series, you would think that this project would be an easy one to complete, like a labor of love, right? Every single thing that could go wrong with this one, did. Some of them just go that way, I guess . After many attempts to work out a layout for a card (I tried a standard sized card, then a 5X5" square card, and then a 5×7" card), I settled on a 8×8" layout since I needed the extra space. I was just having a conversation via IM with the very talented TTIC design team member Jen and was telling her how this project did not come easily and how I messed up at every turn. I tell Jen that I found it odd that the project about my favorite Twilight thing would come so hard…and here comes the genius of Jen…she reminds me that doing an Edward-themed project would be hard, because you sort of get into the mind-set of the character. And wouldn’t Edward overthink every bit of it, and worry about every little thing? Jen is totally, entirely right — how cool is she?! I found that insight very helpful. If you know that, then you can just go with it. (Thanks again, Jen!)
So, finally, here is the completed version.
I wanted to find a representation of the mythical "midnight sun," so I hunted down a photo that I could doctor up to fit the premise. I did quite a bit of Photoshopping to the photo I found (changing a very vivid sunset photo to a black & white, and then tinting it blue), and I hope that the end result does look like a nighttime sun, if such a thing did exist. I’d love to know if you think it worked.
And a word about the paper that I used — the dark blue cardstock is called Night Sky Shimmer cardstock from Papertrey Ink. This paper is just beautiful in person — a really deep shade of shimmery blue with a 107 lb. weight. (By using it for a Twilight card, I’m copying Tonya, who used it last week for her beautiful Twilight challenge card). The shimmer on this cardstock is just right for a Cullen card. As we all know, Edward sparkles, but he’s very subtle about it.
I also used a transparency with text about the theme of time. I thought that this went all well with Edward’s idea of his existence being "unending, unchanging," until he met Bella. (Pause now for a sigh.) I used a couple of adhesive jewels for a diamond-like look – again, an Edward thing. And I had to work in some embossing — the horizontal strip in the middle was embossing with the Cuttlebug D’vine Swirls embossing folder. Because I’m particular about fonts, I used the font that is used in the PDF of Midnight Sun, called (coincidentally enough) Edwardian Script, for the title on this piece. The font for the quote is the now-familiar Carmilla, the font used in the books as Edward’s handwriting.
What a difficult piece to photograph! The blue shimmery cardstock looks black, the Shimmerz on the quote doesn’t show up, there’s a glare from the transparency, and the silver elements (the ribbon and the corners) don’t look silver. Despite all of that, I hope you can get the idea.
Since Midnight Sun has not been published in its full form, and there was such trouble with the draft being leaked, this might be a good time to offer up a disclaimer, like they do in the fan fiction world:
